Dreams, or night dreams, may be auditory and present an immediate message or at other occasions be emblematic, requiring gifted interpretation. Jacob had a dream of a ladder set upon Earth, the highest point of it reaching to heaven. He observed in this dream angels of God ascending and plummeting on the ladder with the Lord standing above it, affirming the covenant of Abraham to Jacob (Genesis 28:12). Lord Solomon got both wisdom and warning in dreams (I Kings 3:5, 9:2).
This idea has also been bolstered by non-religious writings, by oral tradition and from books, for example, the Artemidorus Oneirocritica composed around 140 AD, which had a great impact straight up to nineteenth century.
